How Is Your Score Calculated?

Your score rewards speed, accuracy, and restraint. In other words, guessing wildly and smashing the hint button is not the strategy. You're given three hints and three guesses. Guesses won't hamper your score, but it will end the game if you aren't careful.
Here’s how it works:
1. You start with 1,000 points
Everyone begins on equal footing.
2. Time lowers your score
The longer you take to solve the word, the more points are deducted.

Faster solve = higher score
Thinking for five minutes = consequences

This encourages sharp thinking, not frantic typing. Each second you spend is a point off.
3. Hints cost points
Each hint you reveal subtracts 100 points from your score.

Zero hints means maximum bragging rights, and also a higher score.
Three hints means you got there, but with a little help.

4. Minimum score is zero
You can’t go negative. The Herald isn't that mean. Besides, taking 16 minutes to solve a word game is punishment enough.
Example Scores

Solved in 25 seconds, no hints
→ Very high score. You’re insufferable in the best way.
Solved in 90 seconds, one hint
→ Solid. Respectable. Editorial-board approved.
Solved in 3 minutes, three hints
→ Still a win. Just… less triumphant.

Speed
Efficiency

It’s not about guessing first. It’s about guessing well.

Founded in 2010 and based in the Journalism elective, The Willis Hall Herald is the official student-led publication of the Upper School at North Cross School. The Herald may be published in magazine form three or more times per year. Founded in 2017 and produced by the Herald staff, GeoPrism: A Global Studies Journal may be published in magazine form once or twice per year. The Herald welcomes letters, commentary and submissions of original content that adhere to the Herald’s dedication to factual journalism. Letters and other content must be signed and may be edited for length and Herald style. The Herald does not guarantee publication of outside submissions. Submit letters to [email protected]. The Herald won Gold Medals from Columbia Scholastic Press Association in 2012 and 2015. The Herald also became a member of the National Student Press Association, which awarded the Herald First Class status for the 23-24 issues.
