Patrick Daly

Daly goes the distance, daily

Patrick had a tremendous run [May 15] in the two-mile," said Coach Ed Dickenson. "We did even splits, trying to stay at 1:20 per lap.  He finished in 10:43, which was under his goal time for the spring. To put this in perspective, he set his previous best time three weeks ago in 11:08.  I cannot tell you how proud I am of Patrick's dedication this spring. We have run together five days a week ever since we moved to the online platform.  We have run in pouring rain and high winds, done two hard days of track work every week, and maintained a consistent distance base often averaging around 7 miles a day.  In the last ten days, Patrick has set all-time personal bests in both the mile and the two mile."
While most athletes bemoan the loss of team competition this spring, Patrick Daly has not missed a day of practice with Coach Ed Dickenson.

“Life has been weird since quarantine started because some days it feels like we are locked down and others it feels normal,” Daly said. “Things feel more relaxed for the most part. It hasn’t messed up my schedule that much as I still get to run everyday after school.”

The prolific runner earned all-state honors at the VISAA Div. II state championship race in November. After earning an opportunity to run for Wofford College, Daly continues to improve his times to be ready for the collegiate pace. At the Patrick Henry track on May 12, Daly was prepping to set a personal record in the two-mile run, hoping to go below 11 minutes a few days later.

In fact, Daly crushed his previous best.

His teammate and fellow senior Michael Habib was also there to witness and support Daly that day.

"I was very impressed with how much Patrick has improved since I last ran with him," Habib said. "He’s the most dedicated runner I’ve ever seen, and I can’t wait to see him run at Wofford."

But Daly is much more than just a runner. A trombonist for the symphonic band and a Global Studies Scholar, he is also among one of the seniors whose academic experience has transformed rapidly due to this COVID-19 pandemic. Daly expressed a neutral opinion on the distance learning program:

“The distance learning is different but definitely not that bad at all,” he said. “I have gotten used to looking at my screen and doing all my work online.”

Meanwhile, Daly prepares to go the distance for Wofford when he gets there, even if it begins with distance learning.

“I loved the campus and I am able to run cross country,” he said. “They also have a great program for my major [biology].”
