Riley Hoff

Hoff exits with Willis Hall Director's Award

Riley Hoff earned the award that honors the student who contributed the most to the life of the upper school, but perhaps went underappreciated, despite the fact that Hoff has been a Raider for most of her school years.

Hoff leaves North Cross after many years, but she will continue her education at Marshall University in West Virginia.

“I chose this school because they have a program called HELP which is a support program like CrossWalk,” Hoff said. “I also love sports, so I am excited to be at a school that has a lot of different sports.”

Hoff has played on the varsity tennis team for the past 5 years, and she plans on taking this interest to the collegiate level.

“I plan to major in Sports Management,” Hoff said. “When I put this on the Marshall Facebook page, I was contacted and offered a position as equipment manager for the football team.  I was so excited to be offered this position, but I am not sure if I have time to do it.  I told them I would love to work for the team as a volunteer once I figure out how much free time I will have.”

One thing that students may not know about Hoff is her visual ability. She touched on the fact that disabilities are stigmatized in school.

“Students may not realize that I am very gifted visually,” Hoff said. “Often when a person has disabilities in one area, they may be gifted in others.  I am not a good artist, but I am very perceptive visually. I am very quiet so while others are speaking, I am observing.  My mom always tells the story that I could beat her at concentration when I was 3 years old.”

Even her tutor picked up on this at a young age.

“My first tutor when I was very young said I should be a crime scene investigator for the FBI.” Hoff said.  “His sister worked for the FBI, so I figured he knew what he was talking about.”

When asked what Hoff has been doing during the pandemic, she said that she has been very active. Some of her favorite activities during this time include running, hiking, and biking. Before she graduates, Hoff has reminisced fondly on her time as a Raider.

“I have a lot of fun memories from NCS...  I loved all of the field trips,” Hoff said.  “I remember our trip to Baltimore and the house of mirrors.  I love all of the bus trips and overnight trips for sports.  I remember all of the team tennis dinners at Coach Bagliani’s house.”

“I love participating in tennis, swimming, and lacrosse,” Hoff said. “I have so many great memories with my friends going to football and basketball games.”
