RINGS FOR BOYS LACROSSE, TENNIS, TRACK!!!

BOYS TRACK WINS STATES: Many individuals win titles

FIRSTS:  Coach Ed Dickenson holds the plaque for the state championship. “It was a team effort from beginning to end,” he said in an email. “This was the most competitive VISAA State Meet on record; that is not just my opinion - the times and marks speak for themselves. To put so many members of our team in the top-8 was a huge accomplishment, and I can say on behalf of the coaches that we were proud beyond words.” In front of Dickenson, Jase Rhodes holds his plaque for being the top male in field events for winning the triple jump, place fourth in the high jump, and helping to win the 4x100 relay with Rhone Burton, Ja’ziel Hart and Xavier Mitchell. The quartet set a new school record in 43.97. Burton set a school record in the 100 meter prelims with an 11.11 time. Mitchell also won the 400 meter race. Flavia Daniels won the high jump. Kerrigan Chaney set a school record with an 800 meter time of 2:19.06. Despite fielding only six girls, they finished fifth out of 23 teams.

TENNIS REPEAT: Boys earn 4th title after 5-4 victory over Norfolk Collegiate

Anyone could forgive the tennis team for being overconfident going into the final match. Not only were they 22-1, but they already beat their opponents 7-2. This time, Norfolk Collegiate came ready to challenge the Raiders with a shifted lineup. It meant that the boys had to play doubles for the first time in two weeks after splitting the singles sets 3-3. It looked like the shuffled lineup might make trouble for the boys, but the dramatic tension made the victory all the more sweet. After losing their singles sets, Tyler Bloomfield ‘25 and Colin Chandel  ‘23 teamed up to win at No. 3 doubles. And despite losing at No. 1 singles and suffering from an eye irritation, Alessandro Perin ‘24 joined Jacob Juneau ‘25 to close out the victory at No. 2 doubles.

Anyone near Colonial and Electric could hear the crowd roar only minutes after the 2 p.m. start of the state final between NCS and VES, and it meant that the Raiders jumped out to an early lead. Minutes later, more roar, more score. The tennis match was still going, and what is normally a quiet place got repeatedly disturbed by the raucous crowd erupting after every goal. After starting the season 3-5 through April 1, they boys went 10-2 to finish 13-7. As Captain Zach Morgan put it after the victory parade, “Coach told us it only matters if we win the last game.” Seniors secured the victory with Joe Mason scoring six goals, Ian Cann and Caleb Thompson scoring three each.
